Hope all of you Mamas out there had a delightful day! Mine was just what I asked for: pancakes, then quiet time to myself, then more pancakes! I seem to take the Mother’s Day Brunch idea to extremes…
I used to feel guilty asking to be Not-Mom for Mother’s Day–at least for a little while–but I find that it’s usually just what I need. And luckily, my DH agrees. He took the boys to the Aquarium, and they were thrilled. And I had the whole house to myself for hours! HOURS!
Mostly I played in my closet, trying things on and deciding what needed alteration and what was ready for donation. I’ve got a stack of sewing projects now (just what I needed, ha) and actually finished one project, the results of which I hope to post sometime soon.
One funny thing I noticed was that some of my sundresses (unworn since before I became pregnant with my now-2-year-old) now seem too girlish–cute and funky, but somehow not…sophisticated? enough for my tastes these days. Yet I don’t feel too sad about moving on from them. Especially if I can sell them and buy something new! (I should say “new” since they’ll be coming from the resale shop!)
So here’s the outfit I finally settled on for my forays into the world today. I love this wrap skirt, which I thrifted years ago in Wisconsin. The straight A-line style is flattering to my body shape (apple-ish), and the colors and batik pattern make me think of a costume I helped design & create for a fire fairy in a college production of The Tempest.
Everywhere I look, ladies are painting their nails in gorgeous colors and designs. My cousin has always painted her own beautiful designs (stars & stripes for Fourth of July!) and my mom gets delicate flowers painted on her toes by an amazing artist at her local Walmart. Walmart!!
I’ve been inspired by ideas over at The Beauty Department and in InStyle and Glamour magazines to do something myself. Of course, I don’t have a lot of time (or patience) to do anything intricate, so I tried “colorblocking.” These bold colors combined in a new way have me smiling at my own toes.
I picked up some cute nail stickers a few months ago…maybe I’ll add a little something after another glass of wine…
Can you get away with mismatched colors or designs on your nails? Do you even want to?
I love dresses! Now that my baby boy is fully weaned I am so excited to pull out my non-nursing-friendly dresses again. The ones that still fit, that is.
I’ve been wearing this particular dress a lot lately. It is a nice-weight stretchy polyester (a fabric I usually avoid in our humid climate) but on dry spring days, it is easy to wear, easy to clean, and moves with me. Plus it’s really versatile!
It’s spring! (No matter what the weather is doing…) Here in New Orleans, the azaleas have finished blooming, but for a few weeks every spring, their riot of colors takes over landscapes all over the city.
What better way to celebrate spring than with fresh new lipstick?
OK, yeah, I can think of a ton of better ways to celebrate spring, too. But it’s sort of fun to emulate the feel of the season by wearing its colors one way or another, n’est-ce pas? (more…)
Here’s the blouse I thrifted and recently altered worn in two different ways.
First, the Funky Romantic.
This is one of my (growing) collection of sweatshirt-blazers. I like the Comme des Garcons vibe of this one; the seams are purposely unfinished, and the sleeves are pre-ruched, yet it still manages to look put-together. (more…)
