DIY: Purple mullet

From Plague of the Mullet.com

um…skirt, purple mullet skirt!

I should try to dig up some photos of my brothers and their mullets in middle school back in the early ’80s. Gelled spikes on top, long braided rattails in the back as they cruised around on their BMX bikes after breakdancing class…yes the 11-year-old ladies were all over that.

My now-adult-with-kids-of-their-own-and-conservatively-cropped brothers would kill me. ;-)

So here’s a more palatable mullet. I saw the ladies on Ain’t No Mom Jeans and I’ll Take That in Purple celebrating the short-in-front, long-in-back skirts that are now popular, and I thought, hm, my legs are still pretty good. Could I get away with one of those? Better yet, could I make one?

Here are my results! I had this purple jersey knit skirt languishing in my closet for a while now, a hand-me-down that I’d already shortened to kneecap length (of course, for this project, I wish I had left it longer for a more dramatic front/back difference. C’est la vie). Before:

Tank, Land's End; skirt, hand-me-down

The thing I love about jersey (t-shirt knit) is how you usually don’t need to hem it, if you don’t mind the raw edges look. It doesn’t unravel or fray! Definitely made this project more approachable for me. I knew this would be a kicking-around skirt, so I didn”t mind the raw edges.

First, I decided I could take off about 4 inches without feeling like I was flashing the world. So I found the front center of the skirt, and marked 4 inches from the bottom.

Measure and mark with (playground) chalk

I folded the skirt along the front center (putting the side seams together) and chalked a tapered line from the 4-inch mark to the side seam, ending at the bottom of the skirt.

Chalk lines tapering to sides

I cut along the lines, trying to follow the curve of the bottom of the skirt and making a smooth transition to the original length once I got to the side.

Trimming a little more to smooth out the curve

Tried it on, and felt pretty happy with the result! A little bit more fun to wear (and a 15-minute project)!

Hello, kneecaps!

Now, I tend to wear brights with basic black, which is apparently sooo 2011, but I’m going to challenge myself to try multiple brights together (very 2012!). What goes with purple? Or should I say, clashes nicely? Orange? Red? Lime green? Stay tuned…gulp…

What do you think about the mullet skirt–would you try it? And what brights do you like to wear together? (I may steal your ideas!)

  1. Nice change on the skirt. Looks much more modern. I think you should try lime green with this shade of purple, and maybe even throw in a touch of turquoise or orange. Very cute!

Thanks! Yeah, it feels more modern now. And I love your color suggestions. I like the idea of trying a couple of bright colors together. I’ll try it!

I like the mullet skirt on others, but I’ve yet to try it myself. You make it look so very easy. I’d try a green with the purple.

  3. Hi Ginny! Great re-fashioning – I think the new version looks very cool. I am rotten at color blocking, so I usually do black or white — but be bold and try a green or teal top : >

  4. I like what you did with the skirt. I am not much of a skirt person, but I like the short/long look with tops.
As to what to wear with purple; I love purple and red, purple and turquoise, and purple and gold. I love purple with almost anything.

    • Ginny says:

Yes, I like the short/long look with tops, too. I have a top in my sewing pile waiting for an asymmetrical treatment…someday!

I have to be cautious about my purple combos–here in Louisiana, purple and gold is LSU football, and purple, green, and gold are Mardi Gras colors! Which is fine, during a game or Mardi Gras…I will try purple and red, though!

  5. Brights with black is so 2011? Glad I just found that out! So much for the outfit I planned tomorrow to post! :-) I have to say no to the mullet skirt or hair cut. No, no, no. :-)

  6. Ginny says:

Ha! I know, mullets are hard to stomach. Definitely not going there, hair-wise!

I read the no-brights-with-black rule in InStyle magazine, I think. I think it’s too classic to go away. Besides, half (more?) of my wardrobe’s black…gotta wear it with something!
